FG to roll out festive train services, boosting affordable travel for Nigerians
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced plans to introduce special end-of-year train services across the country. This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s directive through the Ministry of Transportation to ease mobility for Nigerians during the Yuletide.
The NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that detailed arrangements for the service would be made public soon.
The announcement comes amid expectations that the Federal Government may extend discounted travel offers during the holiday period. Sources had earlier indicated that discounted train fares, similar to last year’s initiative, could form part of the government’s strategy to make travel affordable for Nigerians reconnecting with loved ones during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Last year, the Federal Government introduced significant discounts on transportation, including a 100 per cent waiver on train fares and a 50 per cent reduction on inter-state road travel. The initiative, which ran from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024, reportedly benefitted over 112,000 passengers, easing travel costs during a traditionally high-demand period.
The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Transportation, Olujimi Oyetomi, confirmed ongoing plans for this year’s festivities, though specifics about the discount percentages remain under wraps.
The NRC reassured citizens of its commitment to supporting the government’s vision of making travel more accessible during the holidays. “The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, hereby informs the general public that the NRC shall operate end-of-the-year special train services in commemoration of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“This end-of-the-year special train service on scheduled passenger trains is part of the government’s gesture towards an enjoyable end-of-the-year celebration.
“Dates and modalities of the end-of-the-year Special Train Service shall be communicated in due course. We wish all our esteemed customers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance,” the statement read.
