NPA calls for strategic collaboration to strengthen maritime security
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has emphasized the need for strategic partnerships and a forward-looking approach to security.
Speaking at the 2024 National Conference of the Port Facility Security Officers Forum of Nigeria, NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, outlined a vision for enhanced maritime safety through collaboration and innovation.
Dantsoho stressed the importance of Nigeria’s maritime sector as a cornerstone of global trade and highlighted the critical role of the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code in safeguarding port operations. He noted that since its adoption in 2004, the ISPS Code has provided a solid framework to combat challenges such as piracy, terrorism, and smuggling.
“Adoption of the ISPS Code marked a pivotal moment for Nigeria, enabling the country to invest in robust security systems and frameworks,” he stated.
However, the NPA boss cautioned that new threats demand continuous adaptation. He called for a comprehensive review of the ISPS Code’s application in Nigeria to ensure it remains effective in addressing modern challenges.
Dantsoho also highlighted recent advancements in the sector, including significant infrastructure upgrades, the deployment of advanced technologies, and extensive personnel training. He praised the contributions of federal and state agencies, private operators, and international stakeholders in creating a secure maritime environment.
While commending these efforts, Dantsoho stressed the importance of proactive measures to maintain Nigeria’s position as a leading maritime hub. He urged stakeholders to work collectively on innovative solutions that would not only secure the nation’s waters but also enhance its global competitiveness.
“Proactive approach to maritime security is essential to maintaining Nigeria’s position as a key player in global trade and to mitigating threats that could disrupt operations within the sector,” Dantsoho concluded.
