Gombe wheat farmers receive FG boost amid rising costs of agriculture
Amid increasing challenges in the agricultural sector, the Federal Government has extended support to 8,000 wheat farmers in Gombe State through subsidised inputs for dry season farming.
The initiative, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is aimed at enhancing food security and mitigating the high costs associated with wheat cultivation. Speaking on Friday, the Gombe State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Ibrahim Bomoi, detailed the programme’s scope and impact.
Under the subsidy arrangement, each wheat farmer receives two bags of NPK fertiliser, one bag of 50kg Urea, and a bag of 50kg wheat seeds. The government covers 50 per cent of fertiliser costs and 75 per cent of wheat seed costs, allowing farmers to share the financial burden.
Dr Bomoi revealed that farmers were drawn from four key local government areas: Nafada, Kaltungo, Yamaltu Deba, and Dukku.
He said, “The Federal Government is supporting about 8,000 farmers in Gombe to boost wheat cultivation during the dry season.
“The input subsidy is 50 per cent for fertilisers and 75 per cent subsidy for wheat seeds. Some farmers have started receiving their inputs while others are in the process of receiving them.
“But within the next 10 days, all farmers are expected to have received their inputs to commence cultivation.”
Highlighting the rationale for the intervention, Bomoi emphasised the cost-intensive nature of wheat farming, which often deters smallholder farmers. “This is the government’s way of supporting dry season farming in the state. Similar support was given to farmers during the wet season.
“The Federal Government supported no fewer than 6,120 farmers with inputs to boost the cultivation of sorghum, rice, and maize,” he said. To prevent market oversupply and wastage, the government has also assigned aggregators to oversee clusters of farmers and ensure proper utilisation of the inputs.
Dr Bomoi urged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity, stating that it is crucial that farmers use the inputs wisely to achieve the intended outcomes.
