The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States are forging a new pathway to advance technical expertise and sustainable practices in Nigeria’s transportation sector through knowledge transfer and diaspora-driven collaboration.

This development came to light during a strategic meeting between the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), Dr. Toks Omishakin, in Abuja.

Amidst the discussions was a shared commitment to developing a workforce equipped with technical skills to tackle Nigeria’s transport inefficiencies and address environmental concerns. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that investing in targeted training programs would bolster productivity in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of economic transformation.

“Investing in skill development is key to enhancing efficiency in transportation and achieving our economic goals,” she stated. She further called for integrating stakeholders like the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) to maximize research and training efforts.

Dr. Omishakin underscored the significance of sustainability in transportation, particularly to combat environmental issues such as pollution and its impact on public health. He highlighted California’s expertise in green jobs and energy innovation, expressing a willingness to collaborate with Nigerian institutions and states to transfer this knowledge.

Omishakin noted that Leveraging the expertise of the Nigerian diaspora is a key component of this partnership and that CalSTA needs to build stronger ties with Nigeria, particularly in infrastructure development and skills training.

In line with this vision, Omishakin pointed to partnerships with Nigerian universities, such as the University of Lagos, to develop advanced programs targeting Master’s and PhD students. These programs would focus on equipping the next generation of professionals to address Nigeria’s transport-related challenges.

The Director of the Global South Clean Transportation Center, Dr. Aditya Ramji, further reinforced the importance of building local capacity, particularly among youth, to drive climate action and sustainable mobility solutions.

The California State Transportation Agency, which spearheads policy and program development for California’s mobility systems, is keen on extending its leadership in sustainable transport to Nigeria, laying a foundation for innovation, skill transfer, and economic growth.
