Stakeholders seek innovative solutions to boost smallholder farmers in Nigeria 

Efforts to address the challenges hindering Nigeria’s smallholder farmers gained momentum recently as key stakeholders convened in Lagos to explore sustainable solutions aimed at enhancing food security.

Organized by the African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the event emphasized the critical role of digital agricultural extension services in transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector. The initiative focuses on creating a public-private partnership (PPP) model to support smallholder farmers, who account for up to 90 per cent of the country’s food production.

Despite their contributions, these farmers grapple with systemic issues, including limited access to modern advisory services, underfunded public agricultural systems, and fragmented private sector interventions. These challenges hamper their ability to adopt innovative practices, improve yields, and access competitive markets.

The proposed PPP-driven Digital Agricultural Extension Services (DAES) model seeks to address these barriers by delivering comprehensive agronomic, market, and financial information at scale. This approach prioritizes private sector leadership while incorporating user-centred design and financial sustainability to ensure long-term impact.

Speaking at the event, stakeholders from public, private, and development sectors underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving Nigeria’s agricultural objectives of self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports. The initiative also aligns with broader goals of enhancing the resilience of smallholder farmers and securing the nation’s food systems.
