The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has witnessed a significant upgrade, thanks to a collaboration between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the United Bank for Africa (UBA). The newly refurbished E-Wing terminal reflects a growing commitment to improving passenger experiences and modernizing Nigeria’s aviation facilities.

The renovation of the E-Wing, which includes modern lighting, upgraded flooring, and enhanced advertising displays, marks a milestone in the airport’s transformation. At the unveiling on Friday, FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku emphasized the project’s importance in decongesting terminals and creating a welcoming environment for travelers. She highlighted that these changes align with FAAN’s broader vision of upgrading infrastructure and delivering world-class services by 2025.

“You can see that we expanded our facilities for the future; hence the use of terminal 2. In addition, we are using terminal D right now and we are moving passengers in here so that we can potentially decongest.

“We are looking at our arrival time and slotting. That way, we are making effective use of the capacity of the terminal as well as the timing of flights arriving and landing,” Kuku noted.

In addition to the terminal upgrades, FAAN has introduced four long CNG-powered buses to enhance intra-airport transportation, a move expected to simplify passenger mobility within the complex.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo lauded the collaboration with private sector partners like UBA, describing the project as part of a broader initiative to revamp Nigeria’s airports.

“This remodelled E-Wing is an outcome of our collaboration with Hussling and UBA. The new design includes modern lighting, upgraded flooring, and more prominent advertising displays, all aimed at improving the passenger experience.

“This is just the beginning. Next, we will focus on other parts of the airport, including the D-Wing’s departure and arrival areas.

“While it was a joke, the message is serious. It’s about maintaining a good image for the country and its institutions. We have seen improvements and we are committed to continuing that progress,” Keyamo said.

Keyamo also acknowledged the efforts of FAAN and the support from agencies like Immigration and Customs in driving the reforms, highlighting ongoing security collaborations with the National Security Adviser to ensure smooth implementation.

The Group Managing Director of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, underscored the importance of private-sector participation in addressing national infrastructure challenges.

“This is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating an environment that catalyzes growth and unlocks opportunities across every sector of the economy,” Alawuba stated. He reiterated UBA’s commitment to supporting the next phases of modernization, positioning the E-Wing renovation as the starting point of a more ambitious journey.
