Nigeria strengthens global energy influence with OPEC leadership appointment
Nigeria has taken a significant step in cementing its role as a key player in the global energy landscape with the appointment of Mr. Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as Chairman of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Board of Governors for 2025.
The decision, announced during the 189th OPEC Conference on Tuesday, underscores Nigeria’s growing influence within the organization. According to a statement on OPEC’s official website, Mr. Adeyemi-Bero’s leadership will be complemented by Eng. Adeeb Al-Aama of Saudi Arabia, who will serve as Alternate Chairman.
This appointment comes as Nigeria continues to demonstrate its commitment to shaping equitable global energy policies. Adeyemi-Bero’s new role positions the country to play a pivotal role in addressing critical energy issues, fostering collaboration among oil-producing nations, and advocating for balanced approaches that benefit both producers and consumers.
Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), celebrated the appointment, describing it as a testament to the nation’s contributions to the global oil sector. “He emphasised that this appointment provides Nigeria with a vital platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers, and the global economy.
“The Honourable Minister also expressed profound gratitude to Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his exemplary service. He acknowledged Ambassador Aduda’s instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions,” Lokpobiri stated. He also commended Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, Nigeria’s outgoing OPEC Governor, for his dedication and instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC.
The 189th OPEC Conference also focused on broader organizational matters, including reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board. Notably, Haitham Al Ghais, OPEC’s Secretary-General, received an extension of his tenure for another three years, starting August 2025, in recognition of his leadership.
