…..Government, UNODC partner to amplify youth voices through new help desk initiative

Nigeria has taken a bold step in its fight against corruption by turning to its most dynamic demographic young people. On International Anti-Corruption Day, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) announced a strategic alliance with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to launch the “Nigeria Youth Help Desk”, a platform dedicated to empowering youth to champion accountability and integrity.

The initiative, which builds on recommendations from a July 2024 youth workshop on transparency in public institutions, seeks to give young Nigerians the tools and platforms to demand accountability, rebuild trust in governance, and combat the systemic corruption that has stifled opportunities in education, employment, and public services.

“For years, young people have felt marginalized, leading to a loss of trust in government and instances of youth restiveness.

“The Nigeria Youth Help Desk will serve as a dedicated platform to amplify the voices of young people for accountability and building solutions for strong institutions,” said the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Wisdom Olawande.

UNODC Nigeria Country Representative, Mr. Cheikh Toure, underscored the critical role of youth in the country’s development: “Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the vanguard of change today. The Nigerian Youth Help Desk empowers the largest demographic to be agents of accountability, bridging the gap between aspiration and action. And I believe by harnessing their energy and potential, we forge a path to justice, security, and progress for all Nigerians. Everyone must embrace this initiative as a catalyst for transformation, recognizing that when we invest in our youth, we invest in the very foundation of our nation’s future.”

Youth advocates like Mr. Mubarak Idris and Ms. Calista I. Njoku have praised the initiative, expressing optimism that such measures will restore trust and foster deeper collaboration between young people and the government.
