The Federal Government has approved the recruitment of 3,927 officers into the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), underscoring the agency’s critical role in driving the nation’s economic recovery and funding the proposed N48 trillion 2025 budget.

“The NCS has excelled in suppressing smuggling and fostering trade, which is crucial for growth and job creation.”

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, announced this during the 61st quarterly board meeting of the NCS in Abuja. According to a statement by the National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, the minister emphasized the importance of the NCS in achieving the budget’s revenue target of N35 trillion.

Highlighting the service’s achievements, Edun revealed that the NCS had generated over N5 trillion by November 2024, attributing this success to reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu. These reforms have strengthened the agency’s capacity to curb smuggling, facilitate trade, and enhance revenue generation.

“The budget projects N35tn in revenue, with the NCS expected to play a critical role.

“The NCS and other revenue bodies have performed remarkably well,” Edun stated.

To further strengthen the agency, the board approved the recruitment of nearly 4,000 officers and granted special promotions to top-performing personnel. These measures are aimed at addressing workforce gaps and improving trade facilitation.

Edun also noted the government’s plan to secure concessionary loans, grants, and development support to cover the remaining N13 trillion needed to fund the budget. He urged NCS personnel to remain steadfast in their commitment to national goals, highlighting their role in boosting economic stability and creating jobs.
