Lagos embraces AI for tax reform, targets 2025 revenue milestone
The Lagos State Government is leveraging technology to streamline its revenue generation process, training 450 revenue officers on its AI-driven Lagos Revenue Portal (LRP) and chatbot, Madam Shikini. This initiative, led by the Office of the Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue, represents a pivotal step toward achieving the state’s ambitious 2025 revenue goals.
Participants at the training, drawn from over 100 revenue-generating Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), were introduced to the transformative features of the LRP. The platform aims to unify revenue collection processes while promoting transparency and efficiency through innovative tools like the Unique Payer ID.
Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue, Ogungbo Opeyemi, highlighted the critical role of civil servants in driving Lagos State’s revenue growth. “The leap and progress recorded in our revenue couldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support and dedication of each and every one of you,” Ogungbo stated.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s launch of the LRP in August 2024 was described as a game-changer for the state’s fiscal operations. A statewide directive mandates all revenue-generating MDAs to integrate into the portal, consolidating revenue-related activities under a unified framework.
At the event, Ogungbo underscored the importance of adopting these reforms. “The statewide circular mandating the integration of all revenue-generating MDAs places a clear emphasis on the role of this Unique Payer ID in ensuring that we can track and monitor all revenue transactions in a secure, transparent, and efficient manner,” he explained.
Further expanding on the significance of the reforms, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Corporate Finance and Strategy, Akintayo Sanwo-Olu, emphasized the need for widespread tax compliance. He called on both public officers and citizens to align with the state’s revenue initiatives, noting that collective participation is essential for sustainable development.
“We need to ensure that every officer within our administration is well aware of the requirements and what is required of us to ensure that all our revenue targets are met over the next year 2025,” Akintayo remarked.
