Global initiative targets gender equity through trade empowerment
The Connecting One Million Women Who Trade (CWT) initiative has announced a strategic partnership with the World Bank, aiming to empower one million women traders worldwide by breaking down gender barriers and driving economic development.
Unveiled in Lagos, Nigeria, the initiative seeks to establish a network of 10,000 business associations and cooperatives across Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. This network will provide women entrepreneurs with resources, training, and capital, fostering a more inclusive global economy.
In a statement on Sunday, CWT highlighted its commitment to creating opportunities for women in trade. “CWT recognises the immense potential of women in trade. By fostering collaboration, providing access to resources, and dismantling the silos that often hinder women’s advancement, this will create a robust ecosystem for female entrepreneurs to thrive,” the organization said.
The initiative, which began its pre-launch phase in October 2023, has already garnered support from influential stakeholders such as the World Bank, George Washington University, the United Nations, and private sector giants like Amazon.
Former Liberian Vice President Chief Jewel Taylor, speaking at the event, underscored the broader economic benefits of empowering women through trade. When women are empowered through trade, a synergy is created that boosts economies and strengthens communities,” she said.
The launch event also featured the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Blueprint Group OAKWOOD Green Africa and the Women Business Collaborative, signaling a collective commitment to advancing gender equity in trade.
Former Costa Rican Vice President Epsy Campbell also lent her voice to the cause, expressing strong support for the initiative.
CWT is actively inviting organizations and individuals to join the movement, emphasizing that fostering women’s participation in trade is a crucial step toward achieving global economic inclusivity.
