Makinde’s power independence vision begins to unfold in Ibadan
The Oyo State Government has commenced a transformative step toward achieving energy independence with the operationalization of the Ibadan Hybrid Power Project. The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Seyi Makinde and inaugurated earlier this month, is delivering uninterrupted electricity to the state’s core administrative hub.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the 11-megawatt power plant now powers the Oyo State Secretariat and surrounding areas, encompassing key government offices such as the Secretariat Clinic, the State House of Assembly, and the Governor’s Office.
Describing the project as a milestone in the state’s energy strategy, Oyelade highlighted that it fulfills Governor Makinde’s campaign promise to prioritize energy sustainability and self-reliance.
“The first phase of the project is a 5MW integrated power plant consisting of solar power and natural gas.
“The next phase will extend uninterrupted power supply to other critical arms of government, including selected schools, Adeoyo and Ring Road Hospitals, the High Court complex, and Adamasingba Stadium, among others,” Oyelade stated.
The project is being executed under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) partnership between the Oyo State Ministry of Energy and a private energy consortium. This model ensures the government’s access to sustainable energy solutions without immediate financial strain, while paving the way for future expansion.
