NCC approves expanded spectrum lease between MT, Ntel
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted MTN Nigeria Communications Plc approval to renew and expand its spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Limited (Ntel).
The agreement, detailed in a regulatory filing by MTN’s Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah, covers the lease of Ntel’s 5MHz frequency division duplex in the 900MHz band and 10MHz in the 1800MHz band. Previously restricted to 19 states, the lease will now extend to cover all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under a one-year expansion approved by the NCC.
The lease renewal, set to commence on May 1, 2025, ensures a two-year continuation of services in the original 19 states. However, the one-year nationwide extension will become effective from January 1, 2025, paving the way for enhanced telecommunications services across the country.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, expressed optimism about the development. “We are pleased with the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement with NTEL, which now includes coverage for all states, including the FCT.
“The lease enables us to enhance our 3G and 4G user experience as we improve coverage and capacity by utilising the spectrums. This positions us to capitalise on the growing demand for data and improve the delivery of services to to our customers,” Toriola said.
