NITDA raises awareness on holiday cybersecurity risks
As the holiday season approaches, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched a campaign to educate Nigerians about the rising threat of online shopping scams.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness, noting that scammers typically exploit the festive season to target unsuspecting individuals. Fake online stores, phishing emails, and deceptive promotional deals are among the tactics used to defraud shoppers, NITDA warned.
“Scammers often trick people into clicking on fraudulent links that install malware on their devices or lure them into patronizing fake online stores, resulting in financial loss, identity theft, and emotional stress,” the agency explained.
To counter these threats, NITDA urged Nigerians to adopt practical safety measures, including, avoiding unsolicited links in emails or text messages, verifying the authenticity of online stores by checking reviews and secure website connections (“https://”), using personal, secure internet connections for transactions rather than public Wi-Fi, enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) on accounts, monitoring bank accounts for unauthorized activities.
Additionally, the agency advised Nigerians to be cautious of deals that seem unusually attractive. “Staying vigilant and following these safety measures are critical steps in avoiding scams during the holiday shopping period,” NITDA cautioned.
For those seeking assistance or wishing to report suspicious activity, the agency encouraged contact with its Cybersecurity Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT.NG) via email at cerrt@nitda.gov.ng or by phone at +2348178774580.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a secure digital environment and underscored the importance of vigilance in preventing online scams during the holiday season.
