FirstBank sponsors ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ stage play as part of DecemberIssaVybe initiative
First Bank of Nigeria Limited, as part of its annual DecemberIssaVybe initiative, sponsored the enthralling stage play ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again: A Biting Satire’. Directed by the celebrated Joseph Edgar, known as The Duke of Shomolu, the play was held on December 23, 2023, at the prestigious Shell Hall, MUSON Centre in Lagos.
This year’s DecemberIssaVybe aimed to spotlight the richness of Nigeria’s arts and entertainment sector, and ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ stood out as a masterpiece of satire. Written and produced by Edgar, the play drew on his writings for ‘ThisDay’ newspaper and his personal musings on platforms like WhatsApp.
Edgar described the production as “a reflection of the Nigerian experience, blending humor, tragedy, and culture to deliver a thought-provoking message.” He added that this play is his way of communicating societal challenges and celebrating the beauty of our diverse heritage.
The play featured standout performances, including a memorable scene where actress Chantal humorously labeled Edgar a “self-centered Ibibio man,” much to the delight of the audience. Another highlight was a lively portrayal of a white garment church by Segun Adefila, which showcased vibrant traditional aesthetics and energetic choreography.
The production also paid tribute to late Herbert Wigwe, former chairman of Access Holdings, whom Edgar lauded as an inspiring figure. “Herbert was a man of courage and vision. His impact on the banking sector and beyond will forever be remembered,” Edgar said, drawing applause from the audience.
Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting the arts. “FirstBank is dedicated to facilitating unforgettable homecoming experiences this December for gatherings such as weddings, family reunions, and festive celebrations. Our collaboration with the Duke of Shomolu on this play signifies our dedication to promoting the creative industry through the arts and stage plays, aligning perfectly with our vision as an organization that cherishes Nigeria’s artistic landscape,” he stated.
Ijabiyi also highlighted FirstBank’s 130-year legacy of championing the arts through its First@arts initiative, encouraging Nigerians to engage with the diverse entertainment offerings throughout December. From live performances to family celebrations, FirstBank is creating lasting memories for all generation.
With its blend of satire, music, dance, and cultural narratives, ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ captured the essence of Nigerian life, leaving audiences entertained and reflective.
