The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) has announced a move to replace outdated and faulty electricity meters free of charge, as part of efforts to improve service delivery and address the metering gap in its network.
Under the first phase of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) programme, Kaduna Electric will install 5,608 new meters for customers connected to Band A feeders. The initiative aligns with directives from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which mandated the replacement of meters that can no longer be upgraded.
The company explained that obsolete meters, which can no longer be updated, have left many customers unable to purchase electricity units. This has fueled concerns that about three million customers nationwide could face a return to estimated billing systems.
To address this, Kaduna Electric assured its customers that the replacement meters would be provided at no cost. The programme is part of broader efforts to bridge the metering gap and ensure seamless service.
Abba Aliyu Maiborno, Head of Metering Projects at Kaduna Electric, emphasized the programme’s potential to resolve key operational challenges, including technical losses and revenue collection inefficiencies. He disclosed that the company had completed a Know Your Customer (KYC) exercise on targeted feeders to gather vital customer information.
“The installation covers the metering gap on our Band A feeders. There are also plans to replace all faulty and obsolete meters on the selected feeder. The network upgrades along the meter deployment will also ensure that customers continue enjoying our services more efficiently,” Maiborno said.
The MAF initiative, introduced by the Federal Government and managed by NERC, pools resources from all electricity distribution companies into a central fund. This enables the procurement and deployment of meters at no cost to customers, promoting transparency and improved energy efficiency nationwide.
Kaduna Electric has called on its customers to cooperate with its metering teams by providing the necessary information during the installation process.
This initiative comes as part of the broader goal to close Nigeria’s metering deficit, currently estimated at seven million. Other electricity distribution companies (DisCos) across the country have similarly commenced or announced plans to distribute meters under the MAF programme, with a target of installing one million meters in the coming months.
