In the wake of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sterling One Foundation has strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability by expanding its Beach Adoption Programme, a flagship initiative targeting marine pollution and waste recovery.

The programme’s expansion, unveiled in a Friday statement, reflects the growing urgency for community-driven and nature-based solutions to combat climate change. COP29, held from November 11–22, 2024, with representatives from nearly 200 countries, underscored these approaches as pivotal to global climate strategies.

Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with COP29 priorities. “COP29 reaffirmed the importance of solutions that empower communities while driving sustainability. The Beach Adoption Programme is one of our ways of translating those principles into action,” she remarked.

Since its inception in 2021, the programme has achieved significant milestones, including the collection of over 7,800kg of solid waste and 4,900kg of recyclables from Lagos beaches. With the recent addition of Debojo Beach, Eleko; Badore Beach, Ajah; and Okun Mopo Beach, Ajah, the initiative now supports Lagos State’s Climate Action Plan, demonstrating effective public-private collaboration.

Partners such as First E&P, Bonnie Bio, LAWMA, Rite Foods, Sterling Bank, and the African Cleanup Initiative have played key roles in the programme’s success. Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, commended the effort, stating, “Partnerships like this demonstrate how environmental goals can be achieved through collaboration. By integrating circular economy practices, Sterling One Foundation is creating both environmental and economic value.”

Beyond waste recovery, the programme incorporates climate education and livelihood support for local communities. Over 5,000 students have participated in climate awareness initiatives, while women and youth have received tools and training to engage in the circular economy, creating sustainable income streams and reducing plastic pollution.

The expanded programme solidifies Sterling One Foundation’s position as a leader in environmental stewardship and reflects Nigeria’s commitment to meeting global climate targets.
