Housing ministry focuses on infrastructure, administrative modernization with N3.5bn budget for debt settlement
The Federal Ministry of Housing has prioritized resolving liabilities and driving infrastructural development in its 2025 budget, setting aside N3.5bn for debt settlement. These liabilities are tied to key initiatives, including the Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals, and Zonal Intervention Projects, as part of its mandate to address critical national obligations.
The budget, as revealed in the 2025 Appropriation Bill, reflects a dual strategy: addressing past commitments while advancing new projects aimed at improving infrastructure and modernizing administrative processes.
To address regional infrastructure challenges, the Ministry has allocated N724m each for road construction and erosion control in all six geopolitical zones, targeting states such as Lagos, Niger, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Borno, and Kaduna. This approach underscores a balanced investment in mitigating environmental risks and enhancing transportation networks nationwide.
The budget highlights a focus on education and skill acquisition as tools for economic empowerment. A sum of N520m has been earmarked for the construction of classrooms in over 20 states, including Lagos, Kano, and Enugu. Additionally, N1.25bn will be spent on skill acquisition centers in states like Yobe, Oyo, Plateau, and Zamfara to promote vocational training and job creation.
Administrative modernization is a cornerstone of the Ministry’s strategy. The budget includes N280m to automate the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy and N350m to streamline ministerial consents on secondary land transactions. These measures aim to simplify land-related processes and boost revenue generation through updated land charge regimes, supported by a N72m allocation for consultancy services.
The Ministry has also committed N85m to assess Federal Government properties both locally and internationally. This valuation initiative is designed to align with International Public Sector Accounting Standards, ensuring transparency and accountability in asset management.
