CNG buses unveiled for airport shuttle services
Nigeria’s efforts to embrace cleaner energy solutions took a significant step forward as the Federal Government unveiled the first batch of locally assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. These buses, designed for airport shuttle services, highlight the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable transportation.
The unveiling ceremony, held at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, showcased the collaborative efforts between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and local manufacturers, Lanre Shittu Motors. The event was graced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, who emphasized the initiative’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to promote cleaner energy and mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
“What you see here today is a fleet of CNG buses for FAAN to commence passenger movement at all our airports immediately,” Keyamo stated. He noted that not only are they environmentally friendly with zero emissions, but they also cater to the needs of individuals with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity in public transportation.
The buses, available in 31-seater and 54-seater variants, are equipped with modern conveniences such as air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging ports to enhance passenger comfort. The Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, Taiwo Shittu, underscored the company’s role in driving local innovation, stating that the buses are tailored for both airport shuttles and city mass transit.
This initiative marks a broader government strategy to shift reliance away from traditional fossil fuels and adopt sustainable energy solutions nationwide. By prioritizing Compressed Natural Gas, the government aims to cushion the economic impact of subsidy removal while addressing global climate targets.
