Nigeria targets global market leadership in African traditional medicine
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) reiterated its commitment to this goal at the 18th National Technical Mirror Committee meeting on African Traditional Medicine, hosted by Lagos State University, CableNews24 reports.
SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, represented by the Director of Standards Development, Engr. Yahaya Bukar, highlighted the organisation’s progress in developing internationally aligned standards for traditional medicine. Since the committee’s inception in 2015, Nigeria has pioneered the creation of ten African Regional Standards (ARS) for traditional medicine and plans to adopt an additional 14, raising the total to 24.
Dr. Okeke underlined the significance of these standards in improving the safety, quality, and acceptance of traditional remedies. He noted that aligning with global regulations enhances trust among consumers and businesses, paving the way for Nigerian products to access international markets and reduce trade barriers.
The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Adenike Omotunde, praised SON’s efforts in advancing safety and efficacy benchmarks for traditional remedies. She called for greater collaboration to unlock the full potential of this sector for the benefit of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The chairperson of the National Technical Mirror Committee, Prof. Maurice Iwu, emphasized the untapped economic potential of traditional African medicine. He urged stakeholders to speed up the development of standards, enabling Nigeria to compete with global leaders like India and China in the traditional medicine industry.
The meeting underscored SON’s determination to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, ensuring that Nigerian traditional medicine gains global recognition.
