The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable industrial development by hosting the inaugural ‘Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing Global Forum’ at the Vienna International Centre.

The landmark event, part of the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing, brought together global leaders, policymakers, academics, and industry experts to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can drive equitable industrial transformation.

The forum featured diverse activities, including live-streamed panel discussions, virtual sessions, and business matchmaking opportunities. Key conversations revolved around establishing global AI standards, integrating AI into manufacturing processes, and addressing the environmental implications of emerging technologies.

UNIDO Director-General, Gerd Müller, emphasized the need for inclusive access to AI technologies to bridge the digital divide. He highlighted the role of AI in tackling global challenges such as climate change and food security.

“AI and digital technologies offer tremendous potential to address global challenges. However, we must ensure access to these technologies is equitable to prevent further digital divides. AIM Global plays a vital role in improving technology access for all,” Müller stated.

Adding to the discourse, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General, Rafael Grossi, underscored AI’s untapped potential, particularly in industrial applications like nuclear energy. “AI is an indispensable tool for automation, machine learning, and operational improvements. Its potential remains largely untapped, with only 15 per cent of its applicability realised,” Grossi noted.

Colombia’s Ambassador to UNIDO and Chair of the Group of 77 Vienna Chapter, Laura Savastano, stressed the importance of inclusive industrialisation for developing nations. She advocated for increased global collaboration in technology transfer, financial support, and infrastructure development.

“There is an urgent need to bridge the digital gap, empowering all nations to participate and benefit from the digital age,” Savastano urged, calling for international partnerships to support sustainable industrial growth.

The forum highlighted a shared commitment to harnessing AI for sustainable development. Through collaborative efforts, UNIDO aims to ensure that AI technologies contribute to an equitable industrial future, leaving no nation behind in the digital revolution.
