Polaris bank initiative boosts education access for Nigerian students
Polaris Bank, in collaboration with its partners, is taking significant strides to tackle the pressing issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria. The initiative, launched in 2020, has so far impacted 16,000 students across the country, offering a holistic approach to enhancing education access and quality.
The programme focuses on equipping students with essential tools for learning, such as school bags, uniforms, sandals, books, and pens, while also fostering brain development and emotional intelligence. This effort aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
The Managing Director and CEO of Polaris Bank, Kayode Lawal, highlighted the initiative as a key component of the bank’s sustainability efforts. Speaking on the programme, he urged students to take advantage of the opportunities provided, particularly as the initiative prioritizes the education of the girl child without sidelining male students.
Recent data from UNESCO underscores the urgency of the intervention, with an estimated 18.3 million Nigerian children currently out of school. Polaris Bank’s programme seeks to bridge this gap by providing practical solutions and resources, especially to underserved communities.
Between November and December 2024, the initiative reached eight schools across Nigeria, including Opebi Junior Grammar School in Lagos, National High School Arondizuogu and Iheme Memorial Secondary School, Akokwa High School in Imo, Government Girls Secondary School Kundila in Kano, Government Day Junior Secondary School, Maitama in Abuja, with that of Gbaja Junior and Secondary School, both in Surulere, Lagos and Fortune Secondary School in Kogi, among others. The outreach is set to continue in January 2025, with additional schools scheduled to receive support.
Polaris Bank’s long-term vision is ambitious but clear: to empower 50,000 students by 2028.
