ASHON calls for enhanced policies to sustain N2tn capital market growth  

The Nigerian capital market achieved a milestone in 2024, raising an impressive N2 trillion in the primary market, a feat that underscores its resilience and potential as a driver of economic growth.

The Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON) has applauded this achievement, with its Second Vice Chairman, Ify Ifejezie, attributing the success to collaborative efforts among market stakeholders. In a statement marking the end of the trading year on the Nigerian Exchange Limited, Ifejezie highlighted the market’s robust performance despite prevailing economic challenges.

“This is a testament to the strength of our market and the confidence investors have in it,” she said, noting the key role ASHON played in engaging regulators and policymakers to foster market stability and liquidity.

The capital market demonstrated positive growth indicators, including a rise in the All-Share Index and market capitalisation, positioning it as an attractive destination for both local and international investors. These developments, Ifejezie explained, reflect the concerted efforts of securities dealing firms and the proactive measures adopted by regulators.

The President and Chairman of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Oluropo Dada, also commended the market’s performance. He pointed out that year-to-date returns exceeded 36 per cent, outpacing inflation and reaffirming the market’s potential as a wealth-creation platform.

Dada expressed optimism about 2025, predicting sustained growth driven by increased local investor participation and a stable economic environment. However, he stressed the need for policy adjustments to maintain momentum.

Among ASHON’s proposals is an upward review of stockbroking fees, which it argued have remained static for years, and the lifting of the suspension on margin trading to enhance market depth.
