Obasanjo questions NNPCL’s approach to invitation for facility tour

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed displeasure with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over what he described as an informal and disrespectful invitation to tour the recently revived Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries.
Obasanjo’s concerns were communicated through his spokesperson, Kehinde Akinyemi, who criticized the state-owned oil firm for failing to formally notify the former president of the invitation, deeming the move as lacking in protocol and decorum.
The controversy stems from Obasanjo’s earlier criticism of NNPCL’s management decisions, particularly its rejection of Aliko Dangote’s $750 million offer to manage the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries. The former president had accused NNPCL of mismanagement, suggesting that a partnership with Dangote could have yielded better outcomes for the facilities.
In response to these criticisms, NNPCL extended an invitation for Obasanjo to inspect the revamped facilities. However, the method of invitation, reportedly released through public channels, has sparked backlash from the former president.
“Is that the right way to invite a former president of the country? Who says Baba has even seen the statement or read the news? It is a total disrespect for the office of the former president.”
He further questioned whether any formal communication, such as an official letter, had been sent to Obasanjo regarding the tour.
“Ask the NNPCL that as of January 2, have they written to him? Is there any official letter addressed to him, inviting him to the refinery?
“It is an absolute insult, and the former president cannot dignify such with a response,” Akinyemi said.
While the NNPCL has yet to issue a formal response to Obasanjo’s concerns, the incident has reignited discussions about the proper protocol for engaging former leaders and the broader implications of NNPCL’s operational transparency.
As of the time of reporting, NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye had not commented on the matter.
