Lagos workers demand action on housing, infrastructure
The Lagos State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Sessi Funmi, has spotlighted the critical housing and infrastructure challenges faced by workers in the state, urging immediate government intervention to alleviate the burden.
Sessi highlighted how skyrocketing accommodation costs in Lagos and poor infrastructural support in neighbouring Ogun State have made living conditions increasingly difficult for workers. She stressed the need for Lagos State to focus on affordable housing solutions, calling for partnerships with private investors to develop residential estates in underutilised areas such as Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe.
“Workers want to live within Lagos, but when houses become unaffordable, they are forced to move to Ogun State. Yet, Ogun State benefits from our taxes without making corresponding investments in infrastructure,” she said.
Sessi was particularly critical of Ogun State’s lack of infrastructural development, describing the road networks in areas like Akute and Abeokuta as “terrible.” She accused the state government of collecting taxes from Lagos-based workers while failing to invest in necessary infrastructure.
“You are just collecting these taxes without providing infrastructure. This neglect is unacceptable,” she declared.
Beyond housing and infrastructure, the NLC chairman called for a shift in workers’ attitudes toward integrity and accountability. She decried the rising tide of corruption and urged workers to uphold ethical standards, warning that a culture of malpractice would only perpetuate systemic failures.
“Let us do the right thing. Many of us have thrown our family names into the mud, and our children are suffering the consequences of a broken system,” she lamented.
As the year begins, Sessi expressed optimism about the Lagos State government’s ability to deliver on its 2025 budget promises. She urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritise housing and infrastructure development, stressing the need for collaboration between workers and the government to achieve industrial harmony and sustained progress.
