SEC sets 2025 agenda, boosts market integrity, enhancing investor confidence
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking bold steps to reinforce its regulatory framework, with a renewed focus on combating insider trading and enhancing market transparency.
In a New Year message, the SEC Director-General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, outlined a series of reforms aimed at safeguarding investor interests and strengthening Nigeria’s capital market. Central to these reforms is a revamped investigative process designed to improve efficiency and accountability in addressing market violations.
Dr. Agama described insider trading as a significant threat to market integrity, affirming the Commission’s commitment to curbing the practice through strengthened detection and prevention mechanisms.
The SEC is also prioritising transparency to bolster investor confidence. Plans include introducing measures that promote visibility in securities transactions, ensuring a more trustworthy and robust market environment.
In addition to tackling insider trading, the Commission intends to streamline the operations of the Investments and Securities Tribunal to resolve disputes more efficiently. This move, Agama noted, would enhance fairness and encourage greater participation in the market.
Highlighting the potential of Nigeria’s commodities market, the SEC is also focusing on refining its legal framework to drive economic development. According to Agama, the country’s agricultural sector offers immense opportunities that can be unlocked through a stronger commodities ecosystem.
“The SEC, as a partner in development, is determined to make a difference by leveraging Nigeria’s comparative advantage in agriculture to drive growth,” he stated.
As the Commission sets its vision for 2025, Agama called on stakeholders to collaborate in building a fair, transparent, and inclusive market. “Together, we can unlock the potentials of the Nigerian capital market and make this a defining year for our economy,” he added.
