NiMet alerts Nigerians to hazy weather conditions, issues precautionary measures
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, forecasting hazy conditions from Wednesday through Friday. The agency emphasized the importance of public and sectoral preparedness, especially for those with respiratory conditions and the aviation industry.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Tuesday in Abuja, the northern region will experience moderate dust haze, with horizontal visibility ranging between 2km and 5km throughout the forecast period. Some northern states, including Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kaduna, may experience localized visibility of less than 1km.
The North Central region is also expected to witness moderate dust haze, while the inland cities of the South will experience hazy atmospheres with occasional cloud patches. Coastal areas may contend with early morning mist or fog, followed by hazy conditions later in the day.
On Friday, the northern region is projected to experience improved visibility, though slight dust haze will persist. Similar conditions are expected in the North Central region, with cloud patches adding to the hazy atmosphere.
NiMet has advised individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, to take extra precautions due to suspended dust particles in the air. Airline operators are also urged to liaise closely with NiMet for real-time, location-specific weather updates to ensure safe flight operations.
This forecast highlights the need for increased awareness and adherence to safety measures, particularly during this transitional weather phase. NiMet’s timely advisory underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health and supporting critical sectors like aviation.
