Oando PLC ushers in a new leadership era as Alake steps down

Oando PLC has entered a new chapter in its corporate leadership with the appointment of Mr. Ademola Akinrele (SAN) as Chairman of the Board, effective December 17, 2024, following the company’s Annual General Meeting.

The transition comes as the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, officially stepped down from the role after 18 years of service on the board, 12 of which he served as Chairman. The revered monarch’s resignation marks the end of an era characterized by steady leadership and significant milestones in Oando’s history.

In a statement, Oando acknowledged Oba Gbadebo’s exceptional contributions, emphasizing his role in guiding the company through key transactions and challenges while ensuring resilience and growth. “His legacy will forever be an integral part of Oando’s story,” the statement read.

Stepping into this pivotal role, Akinrele brings an impressive track record of governance and legal expertise. Previously serving as a non-executive director and chairman of the Governance & Nominations Committee, Akinrele is a distinguished legal practitioner with degrees from University College, London, and the University of Cambridge. His leadership promises to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor while driving Oando’s strategic vision in the energy sector.

Alongside this announcement, Oando also appointed Mr. Cosmas Iwueze as an independent non-executive director. With over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Iwueze’s technical expertise as a petroleum engineer is expected to further bolster the board’s capacity.
