Delta air lines embraces Nigerian cuisine on Lagos-Atlanta route, complies with local catering directive

Delta Air Lines has announced a significant enhancement to its in-flight dining experience on the Lagos-Atlanta route, featuring authentic Nigerian dishes to cater to local tastes and preferences. This move not only enriches the culinary offerings for passengers but aligns with the recent directive by the Nigerian Ministry of Aviation mandating foreign airlines to engage local caterers for onboard meals.

In a statement released on Thursday, the U.S.-based carrier unveiled its new menu, which includes popular Nigerian delicacies such as ‘ewa agoyin’, roasted cod with agoyin-style beans, and jollof rice paired with grilled chicken or plantains. Vegetarian passengers can opt for bean stew with rice, spinach, and fried onions, ensuring a variety of options for all dietary preferences.

The airline emphasized that these dishes will be part of a broader culinary experience offered in the Delta One premium cabin, promising passengers a blend of Nigerian flavors and international cuisine. Starters include options like sliced beef fillet with pineapple salsa or corn soup with toasted salsa, while desserts range from pineapple upside-down tart to ice cream sundaes.

“This holiday season, passengers can indulge in a delectable range of continental and Nigerian-inspired culinary delights designed to satisfy a variety of tastes while flying.

“As part of the premium cabin experience, Delta One travellers are treated to a carefully curated selection of dishes. Upon take-off, guests can choose from an array of starters, including sliced beef fillet with pineapple salsa and sweet chilli sauce, a refreshing corn soup with toasted corn salsa, or a mixed greens salad with spicy lemon dressing. A sunflower roll, served with whole butter, completes the initial course.”

This initiative reflects Delta’s commitment to providing a luxurious travel experience, as well as compliance with the directive issued by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, in October 2024. The policy, effective January 2025, aims to boost the local economy by requiring foreign airlines to patronize Nigerian caterers.

The airline’s statement highlighted that meals will be served twice during the transatlantic flight, with a variety of options available for each course. As the flight approaches its destination in Atlanta, passengers can enjoy a final meal featuring spicy chicken pie or vegetarian jollof risotto, paired with mini desserts and fresh fruit.
