Customs CG Adeniyi honored as iconic maritime personality of the Year 2024
Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, is set to be honored as the “Iconic Maritime Personality of the Year 2024”. The award ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Apapa Port Customs Command Auditorium, marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s recognition of exemplary leadership and innovation.
This award represents the first time all major maritime beat associations, spanning print, electronic, and online platforms, have come together to celebrate a single individual. The associations involved include the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), League of Maritime Editors (LOME), Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), and others, showcasing a united front in acknowledging outstanding contributions to the sector.
Their collective decision highlights CG Adeniyi’s transformative impact since assuming office. The associations praised his sterling achievements in revenue generation, anti-smuggling initiatives, trade facilitation, and inter-agency collaboration, among other areas.
According to the award’s nomination letter, CG Adeniyi has “redeemed and repositioned” the Nigeria Customs Service, earning both national and international accolades. The letter, signed by Mr. Innocent Orok, Secretary of the Award Planning Committee, further emphasized his role in advancing ICT modernization, staff welfare, and corporate social responsibility within the Service.
The Chairman of the Award Planning Committee, Dele Aderibigbe, described the honor as timely, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This honour is very symbolic. First, this is the first time in the maritime sub-sector that all the journalists covering the beat will come together to honour a deserving performer of excellence, who has made the Customs and Nigeria proud with his purposeful, professional and patriotic leadership,” Aderibigbe noted.
The event also serves as a reminder to other agencies and stakeholders in the sector about the critical role of accountability and innovation in national development. ““Secondly, the Nigeria Customs Service under Adewale Adeniyi has been reconnected to international frontiers and leading in revenue collection, anti-smuggling activities, trade facilitation, ICT, modernisation, and inter-agency collaboration, among others,” Aderibigbe added.
Special guests, including heads of government agencies and key maritime stakeholders, are expected to attend the ceremony, which promises to be a landmark occasion in the Nigerian maritime industry.
