Lagos Govt. to Pay ₦3.5B in Makoko Demolition Case
The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a landmark ruling protecting Makoko communities from further demolition and awarding ₦3.5 billion in damages against the Lagos State government and the Nigeria Police Force.
Cablenews24 reports that the court injunction prevents the government, its agencies, and the police from carrying out any unlawful demolitions or evictions in the Makoko, Oko-Agbon, Sogunro, and Iwaya communities.
Honourable Justice F.N. Ogazi, in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/70/2925, cited the “continuous threat and fear of imminent demolition” faced by Makoko residents, granting an injunction to safeguard the settlements. The ruling explicitly prohibits the government from any actions aimed at displacing these communities.
The decision follows years of conflict, with the Gunuvi (Egun) fisherfolk of Makoko accusing the state government of attempting to seize their land for private development without compensation or adequate resettlement.

According to community counsel, Barrister Femi F. Dodo, the government allocated the disputed land to FBT Coral Limited for luxury apartments, threatening the livelihoods of the indigenous residents.
In addition to halting future demolitions, the court awarded ₦3.5 billion to compensate for past demolitions, ongoing harassment, and the unlawful killing of Makoko community leader by police.
The judgment also restrains the police from harassing local fishermen while they conduct their traditional fishing activities in the Lagos Lagoon.
This ruling marks a significant victory for the Makoko community and underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable populations from forced evictions.
