Civil Society Group Praises Disu’s Appointment as Acting IGP

Lagos, Nigeria – The appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been met with widespread approval, including enthusiastic support from civil society organizations. #Prayer & Support 4 The Nigerian Armed Forces & Other Security Agencies, a prominent advocacy group, issued a statement on February 26, 2026, congratulating Disu and highlighting his distinguished career.

Cablenews24 reports that Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, Convener of the Association, lauded the appointment as a “well-deserved” recognition of Disu’s “outstanding professionalism, disciplined leadership, humility, courage, and unwavering dedication to national service.” The group emphasized Disu’s strong relationship with the public, a factor they believe has earned him significant trust, a crucial asset in a nation often wary of law enforcement.

Fatile pointed to Disu’s handling of the EndSARS protests as evidence of his public standing. She recalled the destruction of a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) vehicle during the unrest, noting that the public and media response at the time reflected a deep-seated confidence in Disu’s integrity and responsiveness. “Nigerians know that he has always been prompt, reliable, and ready to assist whenever called upon,” she stated.

The Association’s statement meticulously detailed Disu’s career trajectory, highlighting his operational excellence and strategic leadership. As Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, Disu is credited with championing intelligence-led and proactive policing initiatives that significantly improved public safety and enhanced the effectiveness of rapid response efforts.

His tenure as Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) was also praised, with the Association noting his ability to lead complex and sensitive operations with precision and professionalism. Disu’s subsequent roles as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, further solidified his reputation as a capable administrator and crisis manager, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order in challenging environments.

Prior to his appointment as Acting IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. In this capacity, he is said to have reinforced investigative standards, strengthened institutional discipline, and promoted professionalism within the Force.

The Association acknowledged the significant challenges facing the new Acting IGP, particularly in light of Nigeria’s complex and evolving security landscape. However, they expressed optimism that Disu’s leadership would usher in a new era of public trust and improved police-citizen relations.

“Nigerians are optimistic that with him at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force, there will be a positive shift in public perception of the Police, correcting longstanding misconceptions and fostering renewed confidence,” Fatile stated.
