The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), under the stewardship of Africa’s leading entrepreneur, Aliko Dangote, is making a substantial investment in the future of Nigerian business leadership. The Foundation has formalized a N1.5 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bayero University Kano (BUK), specifically targeted at postgraduate students enrolled in the prestigious Dangote Business School. This landmark agreement underscores Dangote’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and strengthening management expertise within the Nigerian economy.

Cablenews24 reports that the MoU, officially signed at a well-attended ceremony held at the Dangote Business School in Kano, commits the ADF to providing N300 million annually for the next five years. This significant funding will be allocated as scholarship awards to all eligible MBA, entrepreneurship, and management postgraduate students within the Business School. The scholarships are designed to alleviate the financial burden faced by students pursuing advanced degrees and encourage academic excellence.

Under the terms of the agreement, each eligible beneficiary will receive N150,000 per academic session, commencing with the 2024/25 academic year. This sum represents a substantial contribution towards tuition fees, effectively covering 50% of the current N300,000 postgraduate tuition. With the Dangote Business School currently housing 1,225 students – 696 newly admitted and 529 returning – the scope of this scholarship program is extensive and poised to impact a significant number of individuals.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mariya Aliko Dangote, Member of the Board of Trustees of the ADF, representing Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Foundation and Group President of Dangote Industries Limited, articulated the Foundation’s vision. “Our vision at the Foundation is to build human capital that translates into economic opportunity. Strengthening business and entrepreneurship education is critical to turning knowledge into enterprise, innovation, and jobs. This scholarship deepens our commitment to Dangote Business School by investing directly in the next generation of business leaders and change-makers.”

Dangote emphasized that the scholarship program is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future. By empowering talented individuals with access to quality business education, the ADF aims to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs and managers who can drive economic growth and create employment opportunities.

Professor Haruna Musa, Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, expressed his profound gratitude for the ADF’s generous support, highlighting the transformative potential of the scholarship program. “This support comes at a critical time for many families. Beyond financial relief, it strengthens the Business School’s role as a centre for developing entrepreneurial and management talent, particularly for women who are increasingly taking leadership roles in enterprise.” He noted that the scholarship will enable more students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue postgraduate studies in business-related fields.

Khalid Bababubu, a current student specializing in MBA, Finance, and Investment, spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Aliko Dangote Foundation. “We are happy to be beneficiaries of this initiative. Education is the bedrock of national development, and we will not take this scholarship for granted.” He pledged that the recipients would dedicate themselves to academic excellence and contribute meaningfully to the Nigerian economy upon graduation.

The “MHF Dangote Graduate Business Scholarship” marks a significant evolution in the ADF’s partnership with the Dangote Business School. Previously, the Foundation’s support focused primarily on infrastructure development. This new initiative represents a strategic shift towards direct investment in human capital, recognizing that a skilled and educated workforce is essential for sustainable economic development.

This postgraduate scholarship program is also distinct from the ADF’s recently announced nationwide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education interventions. While the STEM initiatives focus on strengthening science and technology pathways at the secondary and undergraduate levels across Nigeria, the Dangote Business School scholarship is specifically tailored to postgraduate students pursuing careers in business, entrepreneurship, and management.

Since the commissioning of the Dangote Business School complex in 2018, the ADF has consistently supported the facility’s maintenance and upkeep. The new scholarship represents a deliberate move “from hard infrastructure to soft infrastructure,” prioritizing investment in the individuals who will ultimately drive enterprise, job creation, and economic prosperity.

The scholarship program extends to both newly admitted and returning students. New students will receive automatic tuition reductions during the registration process, while returning students who have already paid their fees in full will receive rebates. The N300 million annual allocation is carefully structured to ensure that all eligible postgraduate students receive the financial assistance they need, based on current enrollment figures.

Any unutilized funds from the initial year will be retained within the Dangote Business School development envelope, specifically earmarked for strengthening learning infrastructure and enhancing digital academic capacity. This provision ensures the continued improvement of the academic environment and the provision of state-of-the-art resources for students.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation’s overarching mission is to enhance opportunities for social change through strategic investments that improve health and wellbeing, promote quality education, and broaden empowerment opportunities for individuals and communities across Nigeria and beyond.

Bayero University Kano, renowned as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions of higher learning, is dedicated to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The University’s Dangote Business School stands as a center of excellence for postgraduate education in business, entrepreneurship, and management, playing a vital role in shaping the next generation of business leaders in Nigeria. This partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation strengthens its commitment to providing accessible and high-quality education for all.
