Olayinka Ogunmekan ON Tinubu's UK Visit

By Love Oyedokun

LAGOS, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to the United Kingdom represents a significant opportunity for Nigeria to “reset” its image on the global stage, attract crucial foreign investment, and strengthen its trade relationships with key international partners according to Chief Olayinka Ogunmekan, Past President of the Nigerian-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. While the immediate economic impact of such a visit may not be readily apparent, Ogunmekan believes that the trip serves as a crucial foundation for long-term economic growth and development.

Cablenews24 reports that in a statement released on March 19, 2026, Ogunmekan commended President Tinubu for taking the proactive step of engaging with other nations to explore investment possibilities and bolster trade relations. He emphasized that Nigeria possesses vast untapped potential that needs to be showcased to the world, and that building credibility and reliability in global ratings is paramount to attracting foreign investment.

“It’s no more news that our President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a historic visit to the UK,” Ogunmekan stated. “The economic fallout is not something you can realize overnight. I commend our action President for taking the bold step of reaching out to other countries for us to take advantage of their investment opportunities and to improve our trade with them.”

Ogunmekan views official international travel as a vital tool for “building a superhighway of global business connections,” a concept that he believes all Nigerians should embrace. He stresses that such engagements pave the way for enhanced trade, technology transfer, and collaborative ventures that can drive economic diversification and create opportunities for Nigerian businesses.

Looking beyond the UK, Ogunmekan urges the Nigerian government to prioritize strengthening its ties with Sweden, highlighting the successful business relationships already in place between the two nations. He cites Oriflame, a leading social selling beauty company, as a prime example, noting that the company paid out N16.3 billion in trade benefits to Nigerians between 2015 and 2024.

He also points to the recent partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Ericsson of Sweden, which was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2024. This partnership led to the launch of the ‘Connect NextGen’ Innovation Hackathon in February 2026, an initiative aimed at upskilling Nigerian youth in cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cloud computing.

Ogunmekan suggests that the success of Oriflame and Ericsson in Nigeria demonstrates the potential for even greater collaboration with Swedish companies across various sectors. He believes that prioritizing relations with Sweden could unlock new opportunities for trade, investment, and technology transfer, further contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Ogunmekan emphasizes that Nigeria cannot operate in isolation and must actively seek out opportunities for collaboration and partnership with other nations. He underscores the importance of exploring all avenues, whether in trade, education, or security, to enhance Nigeria’s overall development and prosperity.

The underlying theme of Ogunmekan’s statement is a fervent desire for Nigeria to reclaim its rightful place as a leading economic power on the African continent and on the global stage. He believes that strategic international engagements, coupled with domestic reforms and a commitment to good governance, are essential to achieving this goal.

“Nigeria is not an island, and we must explore all opportunities, be it on trade, education, or security,” Ogunmekan asserted.

He concludes his statement with a patriotic call to action: “Nigeria must be restored. God bless.”

Chief Olayinka Ogunmekan’s perspective offers a valuable insight into the potential economic benefits of President Tinubu’s recent UK visit and underscores the importance of Nigeria actively pursuing strategic partnerships with nations around the world. As Nigeria navigates the complexities of the global economy, Ogunmekan’s message serves as a reminder of the vast opportunities that lie ahead and the critical need for bold leadership and a commitment to international collaboration.
