Cablenews24 reports that the accident happened at approximately 11:40 p.m. when the plane, carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew members, struck a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle that was responding to a separate incident. The truck had been cleared to cross the runway, but the plane, traveling at around 130 miles per hour, was unable to avoid the collision.

The pilot and copilot of the Air Canada flight were tragically killed in the accident. Of the 41 passengers and crew members transported to the hospital, 32 have since been released. Two people in the fire truck were also taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

The airport was temporarily shut down to facilitate the response and investigation, with all flights canceled until at least 2 p.m. Monday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop at LaGuardia due to the “aircraft emergency.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), with officials working to determine the cause of the collision. Air traffic control audio recordings reveal that the fire truck had been granted permission to cross the runway, but the controller urgently ordered the truck to stop just seconds before the collision.
