Tolu Schools Complex Remodeling Highlights Renewed Educational Focus
By Love Oyedokun
Lagos, 9 April 2026 – In a move signaling a major advancement for Nigeria’s educational and developmental infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the revitalized Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle. Often cited as one of the largest academic clusters in sub-Saharan Africa, the facility’s comprehensive remodeling represents a significant shift toward modernizing public infrastructure.
Cablenews24 reports that the President, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, oversaw the inauguration, which served as the centerpiece for a wider series of project launches across Lagos State aimed at boosting human capital and community welfare.
Spanning nearly twelve hectares in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, the complex stands as a testament to large-scale urban planning. The facility is designed to serve a student population exceeding 20,000, integrating the following infrastructure:
- Academic Capacity: 31 secondary schools and 5 primary schools.
- Technical Facilities: Specialized ICT and robotics hubs, modern science laboratories, and vocational training centers.
- Support Services: An inclusive learning center, a primary health facility, and an on-site fire service station to ensure student safety.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the historical significance of the site, which was originally established in 1981 by the late Governor Lateef Jakande. Having suffered years of deterioration, the site was earmarked for total reconstruction to align with 21st-century global educational standards.
“The regeneration of the complex aligns with national policies aimed at expanding access to quality education,” remarked Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa. The Minister further reported a national success, noting that over one million out-of-school children have been successfully reintegrated into the formal education system over the past 30 months.
The inauguration ceremony also marked the launch of two other major government projects, underscoring a multi-sectoral approach to development:
- Maracana Sports Complex: Located in Ajegunle, this facility features nineteen mini football pitches, designed to harness the raw athletic talent characteristic of the area.
- Abijo Agro-Food Hub: Situated in Ibeju-Lekki, this mid-level hub is intended to bolster food security and supply chain efficiency within the state.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio lauded the Lagos State government’s dedication, stating, “Lagos remains a model for other states, as the scale and quality of this project reflect a profound commitment to human capital development.”

Hakeem Smith, Chairman of the Lagos State Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, noted that the project was completed despite complex logistical challenges. The goal, he emphasized, was to ensure that students in the public sector have access to facilities that rival private, world-class institutions.
The event, which drew a high-profile audience including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and various state dignitaries, signals a pivot toward high-density infrastructure investments as a means to foster national growth and social stability.
