Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged graduates of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) Cohort 6 to become role models and “torchbearers of service and integrity” driving societal transformation.

Cablenews24 reports that the Governor delivered the charge on Friday at the LJLA graduation ceremony for the 2024/2025 Fellows and induction of the 2025/2026 cohort, held at Balmoral Hall, Ikeja. He lauded the graduates’ resilience and commitment, emphasizing the Academy’s role in fostering “visionary, principled, and impactful” leadership.

“Leadership is not accidental; it demands vision, preparation, and character,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “I charge you to be agents of change embodying character, conviction, and service. This Academy is a testament to our belief that leadership must be nurtured deliberately.”

He highlighted the LJLA’s mission – named after Lagos’s first civilian governor – to bridge the gap between youth aspirations and practical leadership. During the event, Sanwo-Olu also unveiled “Torchbearers,” a book authored by the graduating Fellows, and pledged continued government support to elevate LJLA into a global leadership development model.

Thirty Fellows graduated from the one-year fully funded residential program, while thirty new Fellows were inducted.

Speaking at the event, LJLA Executive Secretary Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade stated that 60 Fellows have now graduated, with over 85% serving in leadership roles across various sectors. She credited Governor Sanwo-Olu for sustaining the vision to “institutionalise principled public leadership” through public-private collaboration.

Alumni Advisory Council Chairperson Adepeju Balogun highlighted the council’s impact, including mentoring over 200 youths, establishing an Alumni Constitution, and advancing sustainability initiatives for Lagos. She described LJLA as “a beacon of excellence” producing significant leaders nationwide.

The ceremony featured mentor goodwill messages encouraging Fellows to remain impactful.

Seyi Ugo received the All-rounder Award, while the commissioner for Agriculture and food systems, Abisola Olusanya was honored with the Most Supportive Personality Award.

Since its inception, LJLA has become a cornerstone of Lagos State’s human capital development, equipping young leaders with the skills and values to drive meaningful change in governance and society.
