Elon Musk: “People Decide” on X, Amid Nigeria-Sowore Spat

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Elon Musk has declared that “people decide the narrative on X,” his social media platform, amid a growing controversy involving the Nigerian government and activist Omoyele Sowore. The statement comes as some critics accuse X of allowing Sowore’s account to be used to spread information that the Nigerian government deems harmful or false.

Cablenews24 reports that while Elon Musk did not directly address the specifics of the Nigerian case, his statement is widely seen as a defense of X’s policy on free speech and user-generated content.

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between governments seeking to regulate online content and tech platforms that prioritize freedom of expression.

Elon Musk wrote: “On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes data & code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking.”

The Department of State Services had written to X Corp., demanding the immediate takedown of a tweet posted by Sowore, saying it disparaged Tinubu and posed a threat to national security.

On August 25, Sowore, through his verified X account @YeleSowore, shared a video of Tinubu during a state visit to Brazil, and criticised the President’s comment that corruption is no more in Nigeria.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has been a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration.
