INEC Chairman mahmood Yakub

A significant leadership transition has occurred at the nation’s electoral body on Monday, October 7th, 2025, as Professor Mahmood Yakubu officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Cablenews24 reports that Yakubu’s nearly ten-year term, which spanned two major presidential election cycles, marked a period of intense reform and technological integration within the commission.

The handover ceremony took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where Yakubu formally transferred authority to May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Commission’s most senior National Commissioner.

Reflecting on a Service Decade

This Online news medium reports that speaking briefly during the transition, Professor Yakubu expressed deep gratitude to the entire INEC apparatus—including staff and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs)—as well as the Nigerian populace for their backing throughout what he described as a challenging yet ultimately rewarding service period.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve this great nation through the Independent National Electoral Commission,” Yakubu stated. “Together, we have navigated reforms, strengthened our electoral process, and upheld the will of Nigerians through the ballot.”

He confirmed that his departure signals confidence in the commission’s future under new, capable hands.

Legacy of Technological Overhaul

Professor Yakubu’s tenure, which began in November 2015 under the Buhari administration, will be remembered for ushering in several key technological advancements aimed at bolstering electoral integrity. Most notable among these were the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), both critical components designed to enhance transparency in vote tabulation and transmission.

Furthermore, under his watch, INEC supervised Nigeria’s most extensive voter registration drive, successfully expanding the national voter roll to over 93 million—the highest figure recorded in the African continent ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Despite the logistical hurdles and controversies that invariably accompany national elections, including debates over transmission integrity and logistical organization during the 2019 and 2023 polls, Yakubu consistently defended the institutional independence of INEC.

The incoming Chairman, May Agbamuche-Mbu, now assumes leadership, tasked with maintaining the momentum of reform as the commission looks ahead to future electoral cycles.
