Ibadan State Bill Clears Hurdle, Heads to Review Committee
The House of Representatives has moved closer to realizing a long-standing aspiration for Ibadan indigenes, successfully passing the bill seeking to create Ibadan State out of Oyo State to its second reading.
Cablenews24 reports that this move follows a direct request made to President Bola Tinubu by the recently crowned Olubadan, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Abass Adigun, argues that Ibadan’s historical significance and sheer size warrant administrative autonomy, similar to former regional capitals Enugu and Kaduna.
During Thursday’s session, proponents stressed that granting statehood would promote equitable development. Adigun claimed that Ibadan’s capacity for self-governance was comparable to, or exceeded, smaller entities, leading to a minor clash when Bayelsa Rep. Obuku Ofurji challenged the comparison as disrespectful.

The Deputy Speaker ultimately referred the proposed amendment to the Committee on Constitutional Review.
While the bill has gained momentum in the lower house, its path forward is notoriously difficult. Creating a new state requires meeting stringent requirements under Section 8(1) of the 1999 Constitution, demanding super-majorities in the National Assembly, the state legislature, local councils, and a successful referendum across the proposed area. With no new state created since 1999, the journey for Ibadan State has only just begun.
