In honor of the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), under the leadership of Hon. (Mrs.) Adetola Abubakar, has introduced Project S.H.E. This initiative focuses on enhancing the Safety, Hygiene, and Education of girls in the community.

Cablenews24 reports that turing the launch event at the Council’s Multipurpose Hall in Alapere, Lagos State, Hon. Abubakar emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for young girls. “Every girl has the potential to be a game-changer and a leader,” she stated. “Through Project S.H.E, we aim to protect, empower, and educate our girls to foster positive change in their schools and communities.”

The launch coincided with the global observance of the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11th, under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Need.”

Project S.H.E is built on three key pillars:

Safety: This includes awareness campaigns in schools, establishing reporting channels for abuse, and collaborating with security agencies and NGOs to protect girls from violence.

Hygiene: The project will provide regular health education on menstrual hygiene, distribute sanitary pads and hygiene kits monthly, and partner with healthcare professionals to promote menstrual dignity and combat period poverty.

Education: The initiative will offer scholarships, mentorship programs, and leadership workshops to enhance school retention, academic performance, and self-confidence among girls.

Abubakar highlighted the expected outcomes of the project, including improved safety measures, better menstrual hygiene management, and increased public awareness of girls’ rights and potential.

Describing herself as a “senior girl-child,” she pledged her commitment to the cause, warning that anyone who abuses a child in Agboyi-Ketu will face consequences. She also announced plans to provide a direct contact line for girls to reach her if they face any threats or mistreatment.

The Council will distribute sanitary pads, bathing soaps, washing soaps, and tissues monthly to girls who have reached puberty, alongside educational materials to support their learning.

“You owe me your success,” Abubakar encouraged the students. “I want you to be healthy, confident, and successful. If I can achieve my goals, so can you.”

At the event, female students from various schools received bags containing essential hygiene products. The launch included health talks, such as “Frank Talk on Menstrual Health: Myths and Facts,” presented by Dr. Oshodi, Head of the Council’s Health Department, who educated attendees on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health.

Additionally, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), represented by Fisayo Amole, spoke to the students about the importance of consent, body autonomy, and the need for open communication with parents. She urged them to report any abuse to the Agency for immediate support.

Participating schools included Community Junior High School, Alapere; Ajegunle Junior High School, Ketu; Ogudu Junior Grammar School, Kosofe; Kosofe Senior College, Ketu; and various primary schools across Agboyi-Ketu.
