Avm Aneke speaks on Insurgents

Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, recently confirmed as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), has committed to leading a dynamic, disciplined, and formidable Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that will keep insurgents “on the run, without time to think or plan.” He clarified that he uses the term “lethal” in a professional context, stating, “A man running from you will not have the time to devise a strategy to harm you.” AVM Aneke’s vision for leadership is rooted in training, technology, safety, and strategic innovation, asserting that “true military power is defined not by sheer force, but by superior intellect and adaptability.”

Cablenews24 reports that during his confirmation before the National Assembly on October 29, 2025, the new CAS expressed his determination to build an Air Force that is quick to respond, precise in its strikes, and intelligent in its operations. He emphasized that the NAF will be characterized not just by strength, but by professionalism, precision, and a clear sense of purpose.

His confirmation came after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated him in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, which grants the President the authority to appoint Service Chiefs with the approval of the National Assembly. With this appointment, he officially succeeds Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar and joins the other Service Chiefs on the Armed Forces Council.

During the confirmation session, lawmakers praised AVM Aneke for his extensive experience, operational leadership, and intellectual prowess. They highlighted his tenure as Air Officer Commanding of the Mobility Command, where he enhanced strategic airlift capabilities, strengthened joint operations, and improved the NAF’s responsiveness in complex security situations. His leadership in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations was particularly noted for its vital contribution to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts and internal security.

Beyond the significance of his appointment, AVM Aneke’s confirmation holds constitutional and strategic importance. Constitutionally, it reinforces civilian oversight in military leadership and emphasizes the National Assembly’s role in ensuring transparency and accountability within the Armed Forces. Strategically, it signifies continuity and confidence in a leadership transition aimed at advancing the NAF’s modernization efforts, expanding airpower capabilities, and fostering civil-military trust.

A scholar and strategist, AVM Aneke is a graduate of the United States Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama, and holds multiple advanced degrees, including Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies, International Affairs and Diplomacy, and Political Economy and Development Studies. With over 4,300 flight hours across various aircraft, he is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished pilots and forward-thinking airpower experts.

The confirmation session was attended by notable figures, including the Honourable Minister of Defence, Dr. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado. As he takes office, AVM Aneke’s message to Nigerians is clear: under his leadership, the Nigerian Air Force will act swiftly, strike precisely, and execute intelligently—a force designed not just for power, but for purpose, protection, and progress.
