WASPEN Brings Global Nutrition Expertise Home to Asaba

The Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has strongly praised the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) for its dedication to combating hospital malnutrition across Nigeria.

Cablenews24 reports that the commendation came Monday, November 10, 2025, during a palace visit by WASPEN Founder and President, Dr. Teresa Isichei Pounds. Dr. Isichei briefed the monarch on the upcoming 2026 Clinical Nutrition Conference, scheduled for June 23-26 at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba.

HRM Asagba Azinge hailed WASPEN’s focus as a “timely and vital intervention,” noting that hospital malnutrition is a silent national crisis. “I call on the government, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to support this initiative so that hospital malnutrition can become a thing of the past,” the monarch stated.

Dr. Isichei, a renowned nutrition expert based in Atlanta, expressed gratitude and shared her vision for bringing the critical training and awareness efforts back to her hometown of Asaba. She appealed to the Asagba to leverage his influence to secure government and institutional backing for the conference.

The WASPEN delegation also secured the full support of the Delta State Ministry of Health, with Commissioner Dr. Joseph Onojaeme pledging collaboration for the 2026 event. The Asagba concluded the visit by offering Royal blessings for WASPEN’s continued humanitarian work.
