Lagos, NARTO Launch 2,000 CNG Trucks, Driver Safety Reforms
By Emetena Uyoyo
Lagos, Nigeria – In a major push to modernize the state’s haulage sector, the Lagos State Government has entered a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to deploy 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks while implementing critical safety reforms for drivers.
Cablenews24 reports that the agreement was finalized during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting attended by transport sector leaders. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, represented by Hon. Sola Giwa (Special Adviser on Transportation) and Hon. Hassan Adekoya (Senior Special Assistant on Transportation and Logistics), outlined plans to phase out diesel trucks, improve road safety, and provide financial support for operators transitioning to CNG vehicles.
Key Highlights of the Partnership
CNG Truck Deployment
2,000 CNG-powered trucks to be rolled out under an asset-purchase scheme facilitated by UBA Bank.
Operators will access structured financing to acquire the eco-friendly vehicles.
The initiative follows the Federal Government’s earlier provision of 20 CNG buses and three 50-seater CNG buses to NARTO.
Safety Reforms for Drivers
Mandatory substance-abuse tests for all truck drivers in Lagos.
Free corrective eyeglasses for drivers with vision impairments, fully funded by the state.
Phased retirement of old diesel trucks to reduce accidents and emissions.
Economic & Environmental Benefits
CNG adoption expected to cut transport costs by 30% and reduce pollution.
Lagos State collaborating with banks to ease operators’ transition financing.
Government’s Commitment to Safer Roads
Hon. Adekoya emphasized the administration’s resolve to end truck-related accidents:
“The era of container-laden trucks collapsing on vehicles and claiming lives is over. Lagosians deserve safe roads, and we are enforcing that standard.”
NARTO Applauds Initiative
NARTO National President, Alhaji Usman Yusuf Lawal, praised the state and federal governments for their support:
“We commend Governor Sanwo-Olu’s transport reforms, including rail projects and food hubs. Once pricing is finalized, we’ll assess our fleet for phased replacements.”
Alhaji Kayode Okunowo, NARTO Lagos Chairman, pledged continued collaboration to ensure a structured, accident-free logistics ecosystem.
This partnership marks a significant step in Lagos’ push for cleaner, safer, and more efficient transport operations.
