“No Mercy for Terrorists” – Gen. Musa Vows After Senate Nod
By Love Oyedokun
Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s newly confirmed Minister of Defence, Major General Christopher Musa (rtd), has vowed a ruthless crackdown on terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the nation’s security.
Cablenews24 reports that while speaking shortly after his confirmation by the Senate on Tuesday, General Musa declared a zero-tolerance stance against insurgency, banditry, and other forms of terrorism, warning perpetrators to “surrender or face total annihilation.”
“We will not show mercy to those who threaten the peace and stability of Nigeria,” Musa asserted. “Our mission is clear: eliminate terrorism, secure our nation, and restore confidence in our security forces.”
This Online News Medium understands that the Senate unanimously endorsed Musa’s appointment, praising his extensive combat experience and leadership in counterterrorism operations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the new minister to “bring fresh strategies“ to end insecurity.
Cablenews24 recalls that the Senate confirmed the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa (rtd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence following a rigorous three-hour screening session.
The confirmation, announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, came after lawmakers subjected Musa to intense questioning on national security challenges, military funding, and counter-terrorism strategies.
Mr Musa urged Nigerians to remain united against insecurity and emphasised the need to secure the country’s borders against foreign infiltration. He also lamented the delays in prosecuting arrested terrorists, describing the process as too slow, and advocated for shorter trial periods.
Here are some of the key Highlights from Musa’s Screening
- Rejection of Bandit Negotiations
Musa strongly opposed negotiating with bandits, vowing to intensify military operations against criminal groups terrorizing the country.
“We must take the fight to them. Negotiations only embolden terrorists,” he declared. - Criticism of Boko Haram Reintegration
The ex-military chief faulted the deradicalisation and reintegration of repentant Boko Haram members, advocating for stricter punitive measures.
“Terrorists should face the full weight of the law, not rehabilitation,” he insisted. - Demand for Increased Military Funding
Musa lamented Nigeria’s reliance on imported military hardware, urging increased budgetary allocation to boost domestic defence production. - Border Security & Faster Terrorism Trials
He emphasized securing Nigeria’s porous borders and decried the slow prosecution of terrorists, calling for expedited trials.
Meanwhile the screening turned chaotic briefly when some lawmakers argued that Musa, as a former CDS, should simply “take a bow and leave” without questioning. However, others insisted on thorough scrutiny given Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
After the debate, Akpabio called for a voice vote, and lawmakers unanimously approved Musa’s appointment. The Senate President tasked him to deliver results in tackling insecurity.
With the senate screening hurdle over, Musa is expected to be sworn in shortly as he takes charge of Nigeria’s defence strategy amid rising terrorism, banditry, and separatist tensions.
Meanwhile, Security analysts have welcomed Musa’s tough stance but cautioned that sustained political will and funding are crucial for success.
“Words are good, but action is what Nigeria needs now,“ said counterterrorism expert Dr. Kabiru Adamu.
Musa is expected to immediately review ongoing military operations and present a revamped security strategy to President Bola Tinubu in the coming days.
As Nigeria battles rising insecurity, the Defence Minister’s “no mercy“ vow signals a new phase in the nation’s war on terror.
