FirstBank Elephant Girls Storm into WBLA Finals
By Love Ikuku-Oyedokun
Lagos, Nigeria – December 5, 2025 – The FirstBank Basketball Club, fondly known as the “Elephant Girls,” has secured a historic qualification for the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) Final Round after an outstanding performance at the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Cablenews24 reports that the Nigerian champions dominated the tournament, winning all three matches to emerge as Zone 3 champions—the only English-speaking team to advance to the continental finals, scheduled for December 5-14, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt.
The Elephant Girls’ journey was marked by grit, skill, and resilience, particularly in their 66-55 victory over home favourites CSA of Côte d’Ivoire and a stunning 63-59 comeback win against FBA of Côte d’Ivoire, where they overturned a 20-point deficit in the second quarter.
This achievement marks the team’s return to the continental stage after a six-year absence, reinforcing FirstBank’s commitment to women’s sports development in Nigeria and Africa.
Olumuyiwa Olulaja, FirstBank’s Group Head, Human Capital Management and Development, and Chairman of the Sports Council, praised the team’s performance:
“We are incredibly proud of the Elephant Girls for their outstanding display of resilience and excellence. This victory is a testament to FirstBank’s dedication to promoting sports in Nigeria and beyond. We remain committed to supporting their journey as they aim for continental glory.”
The Elephant Girls earned their spot in the Zone 3 qualifiers after securing a Silver Medal finish at the Zenith Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Women’s Premier League.
Now, as they prepare for the WBLA Final Round in Cairo, the team carries the hopes of Nigeria and FirstBank, aiming to make history on Africa’s biggest basketball stage.
As Nigeria’s premier financial institution, FirstBank has a long-standing tradition of supporting sports, particularly women’s basketball, as part of its corporate social responsibility.
With a vision to be “Africa’s Bank of First Choice,” FirstBank continues to invest in youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and national development through sports and other initiatives.
The Elephant Girls are now focused on preparing for the WBLA finals, where they will compete against Africa’s best. Their journey symbolizes determination, teamwork, and national pride—qualities that align with FirstBank’s core values of Entrepreneurship, Professionalism, Innovation, and Customer-Centricity (EPIC).
As they step onto the court in Egypt, the Elephant Girls are not just playing for a trophy—they are championing the dreams of young Nigerian athletes and reinforcing FirstBank’s legacy in African sports.
