Ethiopia Leads Africa’s $29 Trillion Gas-by-Rail Revolution
By Love Ikuku-Oyedokun
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia is set to spearhead one of Africa’s most ambitious industrial and energy projects, signing a historic agreement to launch the Gas-by-Rail Economic Corridor Initiative (GBR-ECI). The groundbreaking plan, valued at $29 trillion, aims to transform the continent’s energy and transportation sectors through an innovative 73,500-kilometre transcontinental railway network—dubbed the “Iron River of Energy.”
Cablenews24 reports that the GBR-ECI will function as a “virtual pipeline,” transporting densified liquefied natural gas (LNG) via rail across 40 Sub-Saharan African nations. This system will provide clean, affordable energy to over 1.2 billion people, bypassing the need for costly and logistically challenging traditional pipelines.
Key benefits include:
75% reduction in woodfuel dependence, curbing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
Enhanced energy security for remote and underserved regions.
A major industrial boost, with Ethiopia’s Ethio-Cluster set to produce green hydrogen, green iron, and 5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2030.
This Online News Medium gathered that the project has attracted global engineering giants, including Germany’s SMS Group and the U.S.’s Wabtec Corporation, ensuring cutting-edge technology and expertise.
According to Musa Ibrahim Kuchi, founder of the initiative, stressed its urgency, “Africa cannot industrialize on charcoal and firewood. We are burning our future to survive today. Gas-by-Rail delivers energy where pipelines cannot reach.”
His statement underscores the central aim of the initiative: to provide sustainable energy solutions that support industrial growth, economic resilience, and environmental preservation.
The signing paves the way for a 2026 summit in Addis Ababa, where 40 African heads of state will finalize cross-border agreements to unify the continent’s energy infrastructure.
With Ethiopia at the helm, the GBR-ECI represents a bold leap toward a sustainable, industrialized Africa—turning energy access into economic power.
