Sagamu, Ogun State – January 2, 2026: The driver involved in the high-profile car crash involving former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been formally charged and granted bail by a Sagamu Magistrate Court.

Cablenews24 reports that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV that crashed along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway last week, was arraigned on Friday, December 30, 2025, on a four-count charge, including:

  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Reckless and negligent driving
  • Driving without due care and attention
  • Driving without a valid national driver’s licence

The accident, which occurred near the Sagamu interchange, sent shockwaves across Nigeria and the global sports community after Joshua narrowly escaped severe injury. The boxer, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor bruises, but the crash claimed the life of another individual in a separate car involved in the collision.

Magistrate Adebayo Ojo granted Kayode bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, who must be property owners within the court’s jurisdiction. The defendant was remanded at the Ogun State Correctional Facility pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Olusegun Adeyemi, argued that Kayode’s reckless maneuvering at high speed led to the fatal collision. Witnesses at the scene reported that the Lexus SUV swerved dangerously before crashing into another vehicle.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with legal experts debating whether the charges are sufficient given the fatality involved. Some have called for stricter penalties for reckless driving, especially in cases resulting in death.

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua has since returned to training, with his management team releasing a statement thanking fans for their support while urging road safety awareness.

What’s Next?

The case has been adjourned to February 10, 2026, for further hearing. If convicted, Kayode could face up to seven years in prison under Nigerian traffic laws.

This incident has reignited discussions on road safety enforcement in Nigeria, particularly concerning high-profile individuals and commercial drivers.

More updates to follow as the case develops.
