Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant boost to healthcare delivery, Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun (Lagos Central) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Thursday commissioned a state-of-the-art radiology X-ray machine at the General Hospital Odan-Lagos, enhancing diagnostic services at one of Nigeria’s oldest public hospitals.
Cablenews24 reports that the event, attended by top government officials and health sector leaders, also saw Senator Eshinlokun pledge ₦1 billion for further upgrades at the hospital, reinforcing his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Lagos State.
Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Eshinlokun described the donation as “a gift of health and a tool to save lives,” emphasizing that the intervention aligns with ongoing collaborations with the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
He disclosed that two new Primary Health Centres in Ojo-Giwa and Itire-Ikate had already been approved, with construction set to begin soon. Additionally, he revealed plans for more upgrades at General Hospital Odan before the end of the current project cycle in March.
Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, hailed the donation as a critical step in addressing diagnostic gaps in public healthcare. He noted that doctors previously had to refer patients to other facilities for imaging, a challenge the new machine will now resolve.
“This intervention eases pressure on our doctors and improves patient care,” Abayomi said, praising Senator Eshinlokun for his “uncommon generosity” and commitment to Lagos Island’s development.
Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, described the donation as a strong start to 2026, reinforcing the state’s focus on health as a governance priority. She emphasized that partnerships with federal agencies and lawmakers are crucial in bridging healthcare gaps.
Representing the NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Malam Ali Garba Bichi stated that the Authority was proud to support an initiative that directly benefits Lagos residents. He urged the hospital management to ensure proper maintenance and optimal use of the equipment.
Dr. Olatunde Bakare, Medical Director of General Hospital Odan, expressed gratitude for the donation, calling it a “milestone” in improving diagnostic efficiency. He assured stakeholders that the machine would be well-maintained and used to enhance clinical decision-making.
Dr. Tope Akintomide, Director of Radiology, highlighted the hospital’s historic significance, recalling that it housed Nigeria’s first X-ray machine in 1913. He said the new equipment would not only improve patient care but also strengthen training for radiologists.
The event underscored the impact of strategic partnerships in healthcare delivery, with stakeholders urging more collaborations to sustain Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence in public health
