Verify Facts Before Reporting, No Bias – Defence Ministry to Media
…Channels TV Cameraman Got Access, Reporter Arrived Late
By Love Oyedokun
The Ministry of Defence has issued a detailed clarification regarding media access to the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day symposium, following what it described as “misleading reports” about the exclusion of Channels Television from the event.
Cablenews24 reports that in an official statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry explained that comprehensive accreditation guidelines had been circulated to all media houses prior to the event held at the National Defence College in Abuja. The advisory specified a 9:30 a.m. arrival time for journalists to complete necessary security protocols before the 10:00 a.m. commencement of proceedings.
“Contrary to certain reports, we wish to state categorically that a Channels TV cameraman who arrived on time was granted full access and filmed the event without restrictions,” the statement read. However, it acknowledged that a reporter from the same station who attempted to gain entry after the program had begun was not admitted due to ongoing security procedures and the presence of seated high-profile dignitaries.
The Ministry emphasized its longstanding commitment to media freedom and transparency, noting that over fifty accredited journalists from various organizations successfully covered the event. “The Armed Forces values the critical role of the media in nation-building and would never deliberately exclude any properly accredited journalist,” the statement continued.
Defence officials expressed regret over what they termed “unnecessary controversy” surrounding the incident, urging media organizations to always verify facts with relevant authorities before publishing reports. The statement particularly highlighted the sensitive nature of security arrangements for events involving serving and retired military leaders, foreign dignitaries, and other VIPs.
In a reconciliatory tone, the Ministry reaffirmed its open-door policy toward the press and assured all media houses of continued cooperation. “We maintain an excellent working relationship with the media and look forward to future collaborations, provided all parties adhere to established security protocols and event guidelines,” the statement concluded.
The clarification comes amid growing concerns about press freedom in Nigeria, with media advocacy groups calling for balanced approaches that respect both security requirements and journalists’ right to information. Industry observers note that while the Ministry’s explanation provides context, the incident underscores the need for clearer communication channels between security agencies and media organizations covering sensitive events.
As Nigeria prepares for its annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations in January, stakeholders from both the military and media sectors are expected to engage in further dialogue to prevent similar misunderstandings. The Ministry’s proactive clarification suggests a willingness to maintain transparency while ensuring the security of high-profile national events.
